Conservation carpentry for listed buildings
We carry out traditional carpentry on listed buildings, period homes and bespoke new oak frames, as builders working across Surrey, West Sussex and East Sussex. We take on jobs in Brighton too.
Lewis and Alex trained as traditional carpenters, honing their skills in the art of oak framing and the restoration of historic buildings.
Together with Josh, they founded The Oak Blokes in 2020, and now work as builders with a complete in-house service.
We work on Grade II listed cottages, manor houses and barns, and every job follows one principle: maximum retention, minimum intervention.
We keep and reuse as much of the original timber as we can. Where timbers are too far gone to save, we cut and joint new oak by hand using traditional methods, so the new work sits honestly alongside the old.
Where inappropriate modern repairs have accelerated decay, our interventions halt further deterioration without compromising the original fabric.
We work with conservation officers, heritage consultants and your architect to scope an approach that satisfies the listing.
Our work on listed buildings won Sussex Heritage Trust Awards in 2024 and 2025, and was Highly Commended in 2026.

Hardwood windows and doors
On listed properties, softwood replacements never last, and hardwood honours the building's heritage.
At Henley Cottage, a Grade II listed cottage, we repaired the historic fabric and crafted new oak windows and doors to bring the building carefully back to life.
Oak carpentry and hand-cut joinery
Beyond restoration, we design and raise bespoke new oak-framed buildings and extensions, cut with the same traditional joinery as our heritage work. Each frame is designed for its site and pegged by hand.
Joints are hand-finished and the connections left visible, adding both strength and craft.
Bespoke carpentry goes into every frame we raise, like the hand-cut green oak trusses of a new-build oak-framed pool house.
