Our team also advises on heritage regulations and planning permissions, from a barn conversion to a full design and build. Where a barn conversion involves a listed barn, we also handle the listed building consent application.
Recent work in the county
At Lancing we renovated a period cottage, including a bathroom refurbishment. The carpentry included a bespoke oak staircase, a loft room framed in oak with rooflights and a new en-suite, a new oak porch with leadlight windows, and new oak windows and doors.
At Slinfold we took on the design and build of a bespoke external oak staircase, giving first-floor access to a garden outbuilding. The carpentry is all oak, with solid treads and sturdy newel posts that will weather naturally over time. We build oak framed garages and other outbuildings with the same hand-cut joinery.
Local materials, traditional techniques
Specifications come from the buildings, not catalogues.
Where damp could be trapped behind cement render, we apply breathable lime render instead, so the building can breathe naturally.
On the manor house roof we used locally sourced, reclaimed Horsham stone, which kept the look of the original and honoured the traditional materials of the region.
Our suppliers include English Woodlands Timber, a local merchant for oak, Best of Lime for our lime render, and Shoreline for plumbing, heating and gas. Every one of them has earned their place by delivering on a real project.
Softwood replacements on listed properties never last, so windows and doors are made in hardwood, which honours the building's heritage.
