Traditional carpenters on period buildings
Lewis and Alex trained as traditional carpenters, honing their skills in the art of oak framing and the restoration of historic buildings. Josh joined them in 2018.
We repair timber frames on a like-for-like basis, splicing in new oak only where it is needed, and replace cement with breathable lime render where it is trapping damp. On a design and build project or a barn conversion, we work with conservation officers, heritage consultants and your architect where a building is listed. For a barn conversion, we can also handle the listed building consent application.
We run a complete in-house service, from repairs to new oak framed garages, and we take pride in delivering high quality workmanship, attention to detail and excellent customer service.
Our work on listed buildings won Sussex Heritage Trust Awards in 2024 and 2025, and was Highly Commended in 2026.
What we work with
Specifications come from the buildings, not catalogues.
- Breathable lime render, applied wherever damp could be trapped behind cement render, so the building breathes naturally
- Oak frame and joinery, hand-finished joints and traditional construction, with the connections left visible, the same in a house extension as in our oak framed garages
- Reclaimed Horsham stone, used to rebuild the roof during our manor house renovation: local sourcing, regional craft
- Hardwood windows, because softwood replacements on listed properties never last
- Breathable insulation, which improves energy efficiency without trapping moisture in the timber frame
- Flintwork conservation, with damaged flintwork repaired to blend cleanly with the original
- Crittall-style windows, a sensitive modern intervention where the listing allows
- Hand-cut timber joints: mortice and tenon, dovetails and pegged connections, as the building was originally made
